Max Verstappen makes rare comment about 1-year-old daughter Lily: 'My greatest prize'

Max Verstappen has achieved nearly everything possible in Formula 1, but the four-time world champion says his greatest achievement isn't a trophy or a title. It's his 1-year-old daughter, Lily.

In a rare personal interview, Verstappen opened up about fatherhood and his changing priorities, revealing that his daughter with longtime partner Kelly Piquet has completely reshaped his outlook on life and racing.

'My Greatest Prize'

When asked directly what his greatest prize is, the 28-year-old Red Bull Racing driver didn't hesitate. Verstappen told Formule 1 magazine, "It's that little one at home. That's the best and most important thing. Our daughter Lily is my greatest prize. Family is by far the most important thing to me."

It's a remarkably candid statement from a driver known for his intense focus on track and his often guarded personality away from it. Verstappen has spent years deflecting personal questions and keeping his private life out of the spotlight, but becoming a father has clearly softened that stance.

A Father's Changing Perspective

Lily was born in May 2025, just ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. Now, roughly a year later, Verstappen says the experience of watching his daughter grow has transformed how he approaches his career. Speaking to reporters trackside at the Red Bull Energy Station, he admitted that racing has become more nerve-wracking since becoming a parent.

"More nerve wracking, I guess, as a parent," he said. The added anxiety isn't about his performance on the track, but about the stakes off it. Every race weekend is now time away from his daughter, and every high-speed lap carries a different weight.

Yet Verstappen also says the joy of going home has never been greater. "For me, it's just really nice to be able to spend time now together," he said. "And also, for me, racing is fun, it's great, but it's also a nice thing to be home."

No Regrets, Only Love

When asked whether fatherhood had brought any unexpected challenges, Verstappen shrugged off the idea. "No real surprises," he said. "I just love it."

He described the simple pleasure of being at home with Lily and Kelly. His daughter's affection is clearly reciprocated. "She seems to like me a lot, so that's good," Verstappen said with a smile. "We spend a lot of private time at home, so it's just really cute."

A Bond Strengthened With His Own Dad

Fatherhood has also changed Verstappen's relationship with his own father, Jos Verstappen, a former Formula 1 driver who guided Max's career from a very young age. Max famously raced go-karts as a child, with his father serving as his coach, mechanic, and toughest critic. Their journey to the top of Formula 1 was demanding and often difficult.

But Max now views that shared sacrifice with new appreciation. "It's a really cool story to be able to have done that together," he shared. "It's probably something that we will think about and cherish for life. You give up a lot of your time to try and get to your end goal, and of course we've done that, we did that."

"It's still a very beautiful story," added the Red Bull driver.

Becoming a parent himself has given Verstappen a deeper understanding of what his own father gave up — the hours, the travel, the pressure — to help his son reach the pinnacle of motorsport. It's a bond that has evolved from driver-coach to one of mutual respect and shared pride.

Fatherhood and Retirement Thoughts

Earlier in the 2025 season, Verstappen admitted that becoming a father had made him think about life after racing. The relentless F1 calendar, with races across five continents, demands constant travel and sacrifice. Spending more time with Lily and Kelly has become a priority.

While he hasn't announced any plans to retire soon, Verstappen has made clear that his family will always come first. "I mean, it's just great to be able to spend time at home," he emphasized.

This shift is notable from a driver who once seemed entirely consumed by racing. Verstappen's relentless pursuit of victory made him the youngest race winner in F1 history at 18, and his four consecutive world titles from 2021 to 2024 cemented his place among the greatest drivers ever. But as he enters his late twenties, with a daughter at home and a long career already behind him, his definition of success has broadened.

A Rare, Personal Look

Verstappen has consistently kept his personal life out of the media. He rarely posts about his family on social media, and even rarer are his comments about his daughter. When he does speak about Lily or Kelly, the usually intense driver often shows a softer side, which has delighted fans around the world.

His partner, Kelly Piquet, is the daughter of three-time Formula 1 world champion Nelson Piquet and a prominent figure in the motorsport world. The couple went public with their relationship in early 2021, and they welcomed Lily in May 2025. Kelly also has a daughter, Penelope, from a previous relationship, and Max has embraced his role as a stepfather as well.

Legacy Beyond the Track

As Verstappen looks ahead to the rest of his career and life, he remains focused on winning races.

"We'll also go for some more wins, I hope," he said after his title in 2024. But all of that now lives alongside a deeper purpose.

For a man who has earned world titles, shattered records, and beaten some of the best drivers in history, the words "my greatest prize" hold profound weight.

Lily, not yet two years old, is too young to understand the magnitude of her father's career. But one day she will know that, at the height of his powers, Max Verstappen measured success not by trophies, but by the love he found at home.

Max Verstappen's rare comment offers a glimpse into the private life of a global sports icon. It shows that no matter how many championships he wins, the most meaningful moment he will ever have came when he held his daughter for the first time.
