For the majority of people, CarPlay is a must-have. Apple's in-car experience provides a vastly superior infotainment experience compared to most options from carmakers. With quick access to favorite apps, seamless Siri integration, and reliable connectivity, CarPlay transforms your drive. Whether you’re navigating, listening to music, or making calls, CarPlay keeps your focus on the road. This guide covers all the essential tips and tricks to maximize your CarPlay experience, from customization to advanced features introduced in iOS 26.
Customize your CarPlay apps and Home Screen
A lot of your favorite apps are probably available on CarPlay, but that doesn’t mean you want all of them cluttering your Home Screen. Thankfully, it’s easy to adjust which apps appear and their order. Open the Settings app on your iPhone, tap "General", then "CarPlay". Select your car’s name and choose "Customize". Here, you’ll see a full list of all CarPlay-enabled apps. Tap the red minus sign to hide any app from appearing in CarPlay. You can also rearrange the Home Screen by dragging apps using the three-line icon on the right. Prioritize your most-used apps like Maps, Music, or Podcasts for quick access. Remember that changes take effect immediately when you reconnect to CarPlay.
CarPlay wallpapers
While you can’t use your own photos as CarPlay wallpaper, Apple provides a selection of pre-installed options. To change the wallpaper, open the Settings app directly on your CarPlay screen (not on the iPhone). Select "Wallpaper", then choose from available designs such as colorful gradients, dark abstract patterns, or subtle textures. Tap "Set" to apply. Apple occasionally adds new wallpapers with iOS updates, so check back after major releases. The wallpaper change only appears on your car’s display; it does not affect your iPhone’s wallpaper.
Wireless or wired?
CarPlay works both wired and wirelessly, depending on your vehicle. Wired CarPlay typically offers faster and more reliable performance, with lower latency for music changes and Siri responses. Wireless CarPlay, on the other hand, provides convenience for short trips where you frequently get in and out of the car. My strategy: use wireless for errands around town and wired for long road trips when you want the snappiest response. If your car only supports wired CarPlay, you can add wireless capability with an adapter like the CarlinKit 5.0 (under $60). These adapters plug into your car’s USB port and create a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connection to your iPhone. Note that wireless CarPlay may drain your iPhone battery faster, so consider using a Qi charger or wired connection for long journeys.
Dark mode
CarPlay supports both light and dark interfaces, accessible from the Settings app on your car’s screen. Under "Display & Brightness", you can choose between Light, Dark, and Automatic. Automatic mode switches based on time of day and ambient light, which is ideal for driving at dawn or dusk when glare can be problematic. Dark mode reduces eye strain and saves battery on OLED iPhone screens. If you prefer consistency, set it to Dark permanently, but note that some car dashboards may have screens that wash out in bright sunlight with dark mode – test both to see what works best.
Driving Focus mode
One of CarPlay’s most important safety features is Driving Focus. This mode silences incoming notifications, messages, and calls so you can concentrate on the road. When enabled via your iPhone’s Settings (Focus > Driving), you can choose to activate it automatically when CarPlay connects. You can allow calls or notifications from specific contacts, and enable an auto-reply for messages. This feature integrates with Siri: if someone texts you, Siri can announce it and allow you to respond hands-free. Customize which apps can bypass Focus – for example, letting navigation alerts through while muting social media. Driving Focus is essential for reducing distractions and is highly recommended for all CarPlay users.
Announce Messages
Announce Messages works with Siri to read your incoming messages aloud and let you reply without touching your iPhone. To set it up, go to Settings > Siri & Search > Announce Notifications on your iPhone. Toggle on Announce Notifications and select supported apps like Messages, WhatsApp, or Messenger. Then, inside CarPlay’s Settings, ensure "Announce Messages with Siri" is enabled. When a message arrives, Siri will read it over your car speakers. You can respond by saying something like "Reply, I’ll be there in five minutes". This feature is incredibly useful for staying connected while keeping your hands on the wheel. Note that it only works when your iPhone is locked and connected to CarPlay.
SharePlay
If you prefer controlling the music while driving, but want passengers to join in, SharePlay on CarPlay is perfect. When you’re playing Apple Music, look for the SharePlay icon in the upper-right corner of the Now Playing screen. Tap it to generate a QR code. Passengers can scan it with their iPhones, and a prompt appears asking you to approve their participation. Once joined, they can add songs, see the queue, and even reorder tracks – even if they don’t have an Apple Music subscription. This works with other supported audio apps as well. It’s a great way to make road trips more interactive without handing over your phone.
Widgets
With iOS 26, CarPlay introduced support for widgets. Depending on your car’s screen size, you can have one or two stacks of widgets. To manage widgets, open Settings > General > CarPlay on your iPhone, then tap "Widgets". You can add widgets from compatible apps (like Weather, Calendar, Music, or third-party apps) and reorder them. Enable "Smart Rotate" to let CarPlay automatically show the most relevant widget based on time or context. For example, it might show your next calendar event in the morning and music controls later. Widgets provide glanceable information without opening apps, reducing distractions. Note that only widgets that work on your iPhone Lock Screen can be added to CarPlay.
Live Activities
Also new in iOS 26, Live Activities now appear in CarPlay. These are real-time updates from apps like sports scores, food delivery progress, or timer countdowns – just like on your iPhone’s Dynamic Island or Lock Screen. Live Activities are enabled by default in CarPlay. To turn them off, go to Settings on your CarPlay screen and disable the toggle. This feature is particularly useful for tracking navigation ETA from third-party apps, or seeing when a pizza is arriving. Developers can design Live Activities to show relevant data while you drive, making them a powerful addition to CarPlay’s functionality.
Pinned Messages
iOS 26 revamped the CarPlay Messages app, adding pinned conversations at the top for quick access. However, this change proved controversial because pinned messages could display previews of recent messages, which some users considered a privacy risk. With iOS 26.2, Apple added an option to disable pinned conversations. To turn them off, open Settings on your CarPlay screen and toggle off "Pinned Messages". Without pins, your Messages app will show only recent conversations in chronological order, keeping your most private chats hidden while driving.
Icon tinting
If you’re looking to refresh your CarPlay interface, you can choose between three appearance modes: Default, Dark, and Clear. These are found in the CarPlay Settings under "Appearance". Clear mode reduces the colored background behind app icons, giving a more minimalist look. Dark mode applies a dark background to icons and UI elements. Default keeps Apple’s standard styling. Experiment with these to reduce visual clutter and match your car’s interior lighting. Some users find that certain modes improve readability in direct sunlight.
Essential accessories for CarPlay
To enhance your CarPlay experience, consider a few accessories. A reliable iPhone mount, such as the iOttie Easy One Touch, keeps your phone within reach without blocking vents. Belkin’s MagSafe car charger provides secure wireless charging while driving. For wired CarPlay, a retractable USB-C cable keeps your dashboard tidy. If you have an electric vehicle, you can even pair CarPlay with solar panel chargers for off-grid trips. A wireless CarPlay adapter is highly recommended for older cars – it turns any wired system into a wireless one for under $100. These accessories make CarPlay more convenient and safer to use.
Whether you’re a new CarPlay user or a veteran, these tips will help you tailor the experience to your needs. From customizing the home screen to enabling SharePlay for passengers, CarPlay continues to evolve with each iOS update. The addition of widgets, Live Activities, and new appearance options in iOS 26 makes it more powerful than ever. Explore the settings and find what works best for your driving habits.
